Apolokia – Kathaarian Vortex (My Kingdom Music)

ACHTUNG: Absurd Nihilistic Black Metal. Mode: 666
Release Date:
24 Feb 2013 - 11:30pm

The popularity of black metal brought strange things within the style… But black metal is a style that does not accept new things, at least if you want to call a band “true black metal”. Do you  think it’s silly? Not yet, for black metal is war.

Apolokia from Italy (not to be confused with the German band of the same name), takes its music to the unimaginable boundaries of style, like a nihilistic fire that shimmers onto your skin until you get yourself blistered.

No compromise is what they bring, the pure spirit of the beginning of the 1990’s. On Kathaarian Vortex, they use a high-pitched sound that can seriously damage your speakers. The entire CD follows this pattern and riffs are concealed in the backdrop, where only trained ears can perceive them.

This CD messes with the thin line between metal and pure noise, it’s musical only because of the rifferama that is characteristic of the style. It’s like a blend of Intolitarian, Mysticum and Sarcófago (from the Crust EP) and if you’re really into the style since the days of old you’ll get the references.

There are no highlights since the CD is straight up from the beginning to end.

I swear it’s one of the most absurd things I’ve listened to this year, if not the most. You judge if this is music or not, but heck, this is the purest black metal in a way that no band dares to do nowadays, because people keep talking about “evolution” and they go shoegaze as an excuse to show their pop preferences. I say: fuck all that. Apolokia definitely is not for you!

Howsoever this is fully recommended for people that can’t get enough of Marduk’s Panzer Division Marduk on ten, and are die hard fans of bands such as Dark Storm, Maniac Butcher and everything that reeks of extreme radicalism out there. I doubt that this year something as nastily extreme will appear in the months to come… but if it happens, please give me a heads up!
