Morbid Slaughter- A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death (Boris Records)

Fuck off, we murder.

Morbid Slaughter is a band that plays primitive first wave black metal with a distinctive punk influence from Peru. With that one sentence I should be able to filter out everyone that won’t be interested in this album. You all know what to expect, plenty of Motorhead, Venom and Bathory attitude filtered through the bestial warlust of South America. I probably should stop choosing to review these kinds of albums, despite my fondness for them, as unless there’s something truly remarkable about them I don’t really have a great deal more to say. Nevertheless, short of referring you to another of my reviews, I’ll do my best to give this album enough of a description to distinguish it from the hundreds of others like it coming out this year.

A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death is the debut LP of this Peruvian trio after a run of demos and an EP. Despite being around since 2009, there definitely doesn’t seem to have been a rush to ratchet things up to a slick and polished level. This is a band dedicated to the first wave, after all. So there’s a lot of effort put into keeping things raw, sloppy and extreme. And that’s pretty much what you get throughout the album, 7 tracks of proto-black/death with little regard for the banalities of technical precision or good taste. Probably the most distinct part of the record is the approach to vocals taken by frontman Envenom; it’s a raspy, at times almost whispered, approach to vocals and manages to be a love it or hate it type affair. I found myself experiencing both reactions while spinning the record.

There’s not a great deal that makes A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death stand out, though certain tracks do manage to please with their sledgehammer simplicity; such as the irresistible temptation to sing along to Fuck Off (We Murder) and closer Slay with Steel. In fact, all of the song titles here tickle me pink with their (lack of) subtlety. You should really know what you’re in for when you see a song titled Zombie Splatter Axe. What more could you ask of them after that?

A Filthy Orgy of Horror and Death is out now.
