Midnight - Satanic Royalty (Hells Headbangers)

Old school black metal the way it should be played
Release Date:
7 Nov 2011 - 11:30pm

Right from the first trouncing riff off of first song, Satanic Royalty, you just know this is going to be one of those very, very special albums. That this song combines a mixture of old school Bathory and Venom certainly doesn't hinder things, and before you can ponder if this is going to be of those albums with a great opening number, followed by lots of filler, second track You Can't Stop Steel soon alleviates any fear.  And if this songs crusty riffs are not enough to get you thrashing like a maniac, main man Athenar also throws in some superb solos.

Rip This Hell is a number that could have been from the early days of NWOBHM, and we mean that with the sincerest of compliments. Necromania is more Bathory worship and a song that Quorthorn would have been proud of.  Seriously, the music on Satanic Royalty is that good. Athenar might be something of a misanthrope, but he sure knows how to write good old school music, that is catchier than a tin full of syphilis.  And so he should, having played with the likes of The Gates Of Slumber, as well as a session member of Toxic Holocuast, amongst a dozen other projects he seems to have participated in.  In fact, we are not sure how this man can play in so many bands and still come up with so many decent songs and riffs. Not that we are complaining of course. If you are some one who likes their black metal with a punky vibe, and idolise older Bathory, Celtic Frost and Venom, thenSatanic Royalty will be one of your year's highlighs. Guaranteed. We only hope that Athenar and Midnight continue to release quality black metal the way should be written - primitive, grimy and downright sleazy.
